The Job

12/7/02 - Well I thought I should spend some time updating the site, since I have been bad about updating this semester. Recently there have been some more things happening, so I'll tell you about another one now. I got a job!

This semester I interviewed with lots of companies, but no one seemed really interested. It's hard to know how to impress people in the 30 minutes that most interviews last. But apparently I did pretty well with one company, and they flew me up to Dallas. That's a story in itself, so I'll make a small insert here of that story.

Right. Early morning flight to Dallas out of College Station. No Problem. Oops, wait, that flight's cancelled. Turns out there weren't enough people on the flight or something. So I have to take a flight to Houston and then to Dallas. Great, now I'm a couple hours late and since I'm on an early flight back, the interviewing time is cut pretty short. Looks like this job is out of the question.

The actual interviews went pretty well. This company uses technology that I've had some experience with, and everyone was real nice. They seemed impressed with what I knew, and I got along well with the guys who worked there. After I got home from a direct Dallas-College Station flight (on time and everything), I thought that they might make me an offer, but I wasn't real sure. Now I just had to wait for them to finish their interviewing and give me a call.

A couple weeks later I get a call saying that I am one of the top candidates, and they will FedEX me a written copy of the offer. After some minor adjustments, I agree to accept the offer. So that's it, I have a job that starts in January!

It's so weird to know that in a couple months I'll be making more money than I ever have before, and won't have homework or big tests to study for all weekend. It will almost be less work, AND I'll be getting paid for the work I do. Wow, cool.

I'm wondering what I'm going to do with all the money I get. I'm so used to living fairly cheaply, will I just go out and blow it all on stupid things? I doubt it. Maybe I should save it, but to buy what? A car? A house? Engagement ring? I guess I'll get all my retirement accounts going, and starting putting money aside for whatever the next big expense I have is (house, car, etc.).

I don't have any real close friends that are out of school and working yet. I know some people that are, but I haven't heard from them in a while. Life changes when you're out in the real world I guess. No time for your old college friends. I don't know if I'll be the same way. I'm not moving to an area I've lived in before, so I'll have to make a lot of new friends if I don't want to be driving to Austin or College Station every weekend. But it will be fun.

It'll be different, that's for sure.
